5 upcoming sustainable construction projects leading the way in Saudi Arabia

Saudi Arabia’s construction sector is in the midst of a historic transformation. Once known for sprawling infrastructure and rapid urban expansion, the industry is now being reshaped by a powerful convergence of innovation, sustainability, and national vision.

As the Kingdom pushes forward with its ambitious Vision 2030 goals, construction is no longer just about scale, it’s about responsibility. Greener cities, carbon-neutral systems, and smarter urban planning are redefining the rules of the game.

A shift toward sustainable growth

Traditionally, construction in Saudi Arabia was driven by oil wealth and population growth, resulting in large-scale urbanization. Today, however, the sector is undergoing a strategic evolution, one that puts environmental sustainability, energy efficiency, and long-term livability at the forefront.

Government initiatives like the Saudi Green Initiative and Vision 2030 have placed climate stewardship at the center of development. These policies aim to reduce carbon emissions, increase renewable energy usage, and preserve biodiversity. As a result, today’s megaprojects are being designed with climate resilience, circular economy principles, and carbon neutrality in mind.

In 2024 alone, the Saudi construction market surpassed $100 billion, with a significant share going into greenfield megaprojects that promise to redefine how cities are built and how people live in them.

Let’s take a closer look at five major sustainable construction projects currently reshaping the Kingdom.

King_Salman_Park

King Salman Park – Riyadh’s Urban Green Lung

Set to become one of the largest urban parks in the world, King Salman Park is a major sustainability-driven project in the heart of Riyadh. Spanning over 16 square kilometers, the park aims to transform the urban fabric of the city by increasing green cover, improving quality of life, and promoting environmental awareness. The project is under active development, with initial phases slated for delivery by 2026.

The park will significantly boost Riyadh’s green space per capita, contributing to lower urban heat and better air quality. It incorporates sustainable irrigation systems using treated wastewater, native landscaping to reduce water demand, and eco-friendly construction materials across all facilities.

Diriyah Gate – The Sustainable Heritage City

Located just outside Riyadh, Diriyah Gate is a $63 billion development that will transform the birthplace of the first Saudi state into a global cultural and tourism hub. Set for phased delivery through 2030, this UNESCO-linked site aims to blend historical architecture with cutting-edge sustainability.

The Diriyah Gate development combines heritage with sustainability by using traditional Najdi materials alongside modern green construction techniques. Its infrastructure includes smart water recycling and sustainable drainage systems designed to handle the challenges of the desert climate.

Oxagon

Oxagon – NEOM’s Industrial Floating City

Also part of NEOM, Oxagon is poised to become the world’s largest floating structure and the most advanced net-zero industrial hub. Currently under early-stage construction, it will support advanced manufacturing, research, and logistics while adhering to strict environmental goals. Initial port and logistics infrastructure is targeted for completion by 2026.

Oxagon is being designed as a model of clean, circular industry, powered entirely by renewable energy sources such as wind, solar, and hydrogen. Its master plan embraces circular economy principles, aiming for zero landfill waste and minimal environmental impact.

King Abdullah Financial District (KAFD) Expansion – Riyadh

Already a prominent business district in Riyadh, the KAFD is now undergoing a major sustainability-focused expansion, aimed at transforming it into a globally recognized green finance and innovation hub. New phases are under construction and will include mixed-use towers, residential communities, and green mobility infrastructure.

The King Abdullah Financial District (KAFD) expansion is being shaped with sustainability at its core, with new buildings targeting LEED Gold and Platinum certifications. The district incorporates district cooling systems and solar energy solutions to reduce its environmental footprint.

AMAALA – The Luxury Regenerative Destination

Now entering major construction phases, AMAALA is a wellness and sustainability-focused tourism development on the northwestern Red Sea coast. The first phase, Triple Bay, is expected to open in 2025, with full completion by 2027.

AMAALA is being developed with a strong focus on environmental stewardship, aiming for net-zero operations and full reliance on renewable energy. Its construction approach emphasizes low-impact, modular building techniques that reduce ecological disruption.
